Neurological Conditions

Pilates and Physiotherapy recovery

How Pilates & physiotherapy can help aid recovery

All neurological conditions involve some sort of damage to the nerve cells of the brain and or spinal cord. This can be a sudden onset, e.g. trauma to the brain (acquired brain injury) or an interruption   to the blood flow to the brain (stroke). Other conditions are more progressive in nature e.g. Parkinson's disease or MS.

The brain is very adaptable and is able to compensate for any loss of function by making new connections and learning new skills, this is called neuroplasticity.

We provide treatment and rehabilitation in the form of physiotherapy and Pilates for a wide range of neurological conditions including stroke, MS, Parkinson's disease, cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury and spinal cord injury.

Our physiotherapist also has experience of treating motor neurone disease, functional neurological disorder, Huntington’s disease, Guillaine-Barré syndrome, hereditary spastic paraplegia, transverse myelitis, brain tumour, multiple system atrophy (MSA) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP).

“I've been having individual Pilates lessons with Katie for several months now, since suffering a minor stroke last year. I've found these to be extremely beneficial to my recovery and have found Katie to be an excellent teacher with an impressive knowledge of both the neurological as well as the physical aspects of the exercises. Her friendly and upbeat personality makes the lessons a pleasure rather than a chore..”

It is important to work with qualified professionals, such as a Pilates instructor and a physiotherapist experienced in neurological rehabilitation, to ensure that the exercises and interventions are tailored to the specific needs and capabilities of the individual.
